UV Light


UV can increase the risk of premature ageing of the eyes as well as diseases like cataracts and skin cancer. Around 60% of UV exposure comes from direct sunlight, but the rest comes from reflections from glass buildings, water, the ground, the sky and even from the rear side of your lenses if they are not UV protected.


Wear sunglasses (or clear lenses with UV filters) that have a high Sun-Eye Protection Factor and UV protection on the front and back of the lenses.

Blue-Violet Light


Staring at bright screens all day and late at night exposes our eyes to Blue-Violet light – which can potentially be harmful to retinal cells. This type of light is also emitted from the sun and from LED lighting and can contribute to premature ageing of the eyes.


Wear lenses that protect against blue-violet light – but ensure the lenses do not filter blue-turquoise light (which some do) as this contributes to a healthy sleep cycle.

Diet and Health


Obesity and a lack of exercise can have a profound effect on your overall health. In particular, not eating the right foods and not exercising can impact on the healthiness of your eyes. Certain vitamins and nutrients can help prevent cataracts and lowering high blood pressure will reduce the chance of complications.


Eat a healthy, balanced diet, exercise regularly and get your eyes tested at least once every two years.

Eye Strain


Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is a potential side-effect of looking at screens for an excessive amount of time. Constantly changing focus and the position of our eyes can strain them. This can lead to headaches, sore eyes, blurred vision, stiff neck and shoulders and fatigue.


Take regular breaks from screen activity – every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Ensure the screen is clear and at the right contrast and brightness settings. Blink often to keep the eyes moist and use eye drops.
